Happy Friday, friends!
For the past few weeks T and I have been getting up before sunrise to get our mid-week runs in before work, and more importantly, before the humidity and heat gets too bad. Otherwise, I would happily sleep in and run after work 🙂
Since we live in an apartment with planned communities about 1/4 to 1/2 miles behind us, we like to just run out our door and run there instead of driving to the Kiln Creek community, which is about a 10-15 minute drive each way. The advantage to running there is well-lit paved sidewalks. The added driving time takes a huge chunk out of the morning, meaning an even earlier wake up time. Not cool.
Running near our apartment means running on roads with no sidewalks, no lights. Sounds stupid huh? Well yeah, I agree (well, sometimes). But here’s the catch: NO ONE IS ON THE ROAD AT 4AM!! Of course, the occasional car will pass us, but for the most part–the road is ours. Oh and I never, EVER run alone.
Okay, so now I’ve admitted how potentially unsafe my running route could be…on to the safety gear.
I like gear with reflective qualities.
My water bottle holder has reflective stripes.
I like blinky things
We bought these magnetic blinky lights from REI. Good purchase.
I like running in a vest. Okay not really, but it’s super reflective.
The one thing we always carry is a phone. This is a no brainer.
What are your safety rules/items you carry when running in the dark?
